House Siding Types

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding offers a variety of styles, textures and colors along with vertical and horizontal panels, wood shake. The cost is low to moderate. Vinyl is a low-maintenance material and is capable of lasting for as long as 50 years.

Wood Siding

Wood siding offersa range of styles, textures and finishes but needs an outer finish like paint or stain. The cost ranges from $3 to $14 per square feet, on average moderate to soaring. As wood needs to be stained or finished painted, it is susceptible to moisture problems when the home is not ventilated correctly.

Metal Siding

Metal siding is found to have panels, shingles and vertical strips. There is aluminum siding for $3 to $6 per foot and uncoated steel for approximately $4 to $8 a feet. Steel and aluminum both are low maintenance but are susceptible to denting.

Fiber Cement Siding

When properly installed, fiber cements siding looks like natural wood. It is very durable, however, a little on the cheaper side.

This material is low maintenance and does not damageby rot or insects. It can last for 50 years long.

Wood Siding

Wood siding has horizontal and overlapping joints.
The wood board or siding board is vertical, and comes in the styles like board and batten, board-on-board and more.
The board siding is available with a plywood version, often referred to as the T1-11, which is simply external flooring with various facial and groove treatments to emit a traditional design.
Wood siding is easy to repair but hard to install on existing sidings.
Wood needs to be painted or stained externally.
It is subject to splitting and warping.
Sun exposure, redness and insects may damage the siding.

Metal Siding

This factory-applied finish usually includes the maximum resistance to corrosion.
Plain, unfinished panel for corrosion protection are typically galvanized.
Metal is usually used as a 'retrofit' siding, and is sometimes used directly over wood siding when aesthetic is desirable along with low maintenance, or wood siding is severely damaged.
Metal is durable material and is known to fade, chalk and bleed on the walls of brick.
Metal is now available for additional resistance to fading and weathering with some special plastics or vinyl coatings.
Aluminium and steel can dent easily.
